A fir tree and a thorn tree lived in a forest. One day, the fir tree said to the thorn tree. "Hey, I think you are useless. Look at me. We fir trees are always necessary to make houses and warehouses and all kinds of things." The fir tree laughed at the thorn tree. The thorn answered with a smile. “Sure you are. But think about this. If a wood cutter appeared now, who would laugh and who would cry?” 

전나무와 가시나무 

어느 숲에 전나무와 가시나무가 곁에서 함께 살고 있었어요. 그런데 어느 날 전나무는 가시나무를 보며 이렇게 말했어요. “이봐, 가시나무야. 넌 도대체 아무런 쓸 데가 없는 것 같아. 날 봐. 난 모두에게 중요한 집이나 창고 등을 만드는데 꼭 필요하잖아.” 전나무는 우쭐대며 가시나무를 무시 했어요. 가시나무는 한 번 피식 웃고는 이렇게 대답했어요. “물론 그렇지. 넌 참 쓸모가 많은 친구야. 하지만 말이야, 지금 당장이라도 톱과 도끼를 든 나무꾼이 우리 앞에 나타난다고 생각해봐. 그럼 너와 나 둘 중에 누가 웃고 누가 울겠니?” ​
